What Are Shopify Templates?

Templates in Shopify allow you to create custom layouts for different products, pages, or collections. This means you can add specific sections to one product page without changing how other product pages look.

Example:
Let’s say you sell a diamond ring and a clamp cap. You might want a section that says “100% Natural Diamonds” only on the diamond ring product page, not on the clamp cap page. This is possible with custom product templates.

The Problem With Default Templates

By default, all products in Shopify use the same template — usually the default product template. So if you make any changes in that template, every product page will be affected.

This limits your ability to customize individual product pages.

How to Create a Custom Product Template in Shopify

Let’s go step by step to create a new product template and apply it to a specific product:

1. Open the Theme Customizer

First, go to your Shopify theme customizer and open any product page.

2. Create a New Template

In the sidebar, click on “Create template”

Name your template (e.g., natural-product)

Click “Create template”

3. Make Your Changes

Now that your new template is created:

• Add or modify sections as needed (e.g., add a “100% Natural Diamonds” section)
• Click Save

4. Assign the Template to a Product

• Go to your Shopify admin dashboard
• Navigate to Products
• Search and open the product you want to assign the new template to
• In the Theme template section, select your new template
• Click Save

5. Preview the Changes

Refresh the product page. You’ll now see the new section or layout applied only to that product, while other products remain unchanged.

Why Use Custom Templates?

Using custom templates gives you more control over how each product or page looks. You can:

• Highlight special features for certain products
• Add trust-building sections like testimonials or certifications
• Avoid affecting other products while making edits
